LED Bar Light vs LED Grille Screen: Which Fits Your Facade?
Summary: Both products are built from IP67 LED light bars on low-voltage DC, so weather rating does not decide it. An LED bar light is one linear fixture — 21 × 1,500 mm, 34 × 1,500 mm or 53.6 × 1,000 mm — bought by the piece and spaced by you, averaging 10–18 W/m. An LED grille screen (F1517 / F1514) is a modular cell — 1 m × 1 m, 1 m × 0.4 m or 1 m × 0.5 m — pre-wired as a fixed 16 × 40 or 16 × 32 matrix reaching 1,600 px/m², with 39–76% permeability and DMX512-2M addressing. Choose bar lights for linear designs; choose a grille screen for a defined image surface and DMX control.

The Short Answer
- Choose LED bar lights when the design is linear — outlines, mullions, soffits, bridges, trusses, stage edges — or when you need wide-beam washing: the 3027 and 5426 run 4R4G4B and 6R6G6B at 18 W/m with a 120° beam. You set the spacing, so you set the resolution.
- Choose an LED grille screen when you need a continuous picture surface with a published pixel matrix (up to 1,600 px/m²), stated permeability for the wind calculation (39–76%), and DMX512 addressing that lands on the same console as the rest of the facade.
- Weather rating will not decide this. Both are IP67, DC 24–48 V, 16-bit, >5,000 Hz, −20 to +50 °C, ≥50,000 hours, CE / RoHS / FCC. Geometry and control decide it — one follows your lines, the other imposes a grid.
- Do not confuse the F1517 / F1514 grille screen with the P15.6 / P25 grille screens. Those are different products: AC 100–240 V, SPI-controlled, 4,000–10,000 nit display-class units for daylight advertising.
The Five Differences That Decide It
- What arrives on site. A bar light is one fixture: 21 × 1,500 mm (2115, 2117), 34 × 1,500 mm (3415), or 53.6 × 1,000 mm (3027, 5426). A grille screen is a cell — 1 m × 1 m (1517), 1 m × 0.4 m at P25 or 1 m × 0.5 m at P31.25 (1514) — with 14.5 mm bars already spaced at a fixed pitch.
- Pixel geometry.A bar carries one row: 60 pixels along 1,500 mm at P25, 48 at P31.25, 20 on the 1,000 mm models. The vertical pitch is your mounting spacing — you own the resolution. A cell is a fixed raster: 16 × 40 at P25, 16 × 32 at P31.25, up to 1,600 px/m².
- Control topology.Bars split: 2115/2117/3415 run parallel control; only 3027 and 5426 run DMX512. Every grille screen runs DMX512-2M, so it joins an existing DMX console — parallel-control bars need a second system and their own mapping.
- Optical job.Bars do line work at 1R1G1B / 10 W/m (110°/110° or 90°/45°), or washing at 4R4G4B and 6R6G6B / 18 W/m with a 120° beam — output scales with die count, not a published cd/m² figure. The grille screen is a media surface: 2R2G2B DIP347 at >288 cd/m² (F1517), 1RGB SMD3535 at >100 cd/m² (F1514), both tuned for night viewing at distance.
- Wind, weight and joints.The grille screen publishes permeability (39–76%) and weight (bar 400–450 g plus 350–600 g/m of mounting bar), so it drops straight into a wind and dead-load calculation. A bar array is more open, and the 1,500 mm body halves the joints and power taps per run against a 1,000 mm bar.

What the Engineering Actually Asks of You
INMU has built facade LED systems since 2008, with products used at the Hangzhou G20 Summit, the CCTV Spring Festival Gala 2017, the Qingdao SCO Summit, the Wuhan Military World Games and the 100th Anniversary celebrations. Two numbers matter here, and they differ per product.
Grille screen projects start with addressing. A 16 × 40 cell holds 640 pixels; with 2R2G2B on the F1517 that is 3,840 channels from a single 1 m × 1 m cell — about seven and a half DMX universes. These projects are zoned across multiple DMX lines, with the address plan fixed before installation rather than discovered on site.
Bar light projects start with runs. In the Jinan video LED strip project — 1,000 m² at P20, 24 V DC, 10 W/m — the load sits along lines instead of in cabinets, so it was engineered as power and data runs. The DC 24–48 V window on both families is what makes long runs workable, the same discipline as installing point lights on a 100-meter-plus high-rise.
Short version: bar light projects are a power-distribution problem; grille screen projects are an addressing problem.
Common Mistakes
- Spacing bars arbitrarily and expecting video. You get a coherent image only if vertical spacing matches the horizontal pixel pitch — otherwise it is a line field, not a raster.
- Specifying an F1517 for daylight advertising. At >288 cd/m² it is night-time media; daylight-readable grille screens are the 4,000–10,000 nit P15.6 / P25 line.
- Skipping the wind number. A bar array has no published permeability, so the engineer still needs your spacing drawing before the load calculation is real.
- Leaving long runs at 24 V. Both families accept 48 V within the DC 24–48 V window — use it on tall or long elevations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Which one is brighter? They are specified differently. The grille screen publishes >288 cd/m² (F1517) and >100 cd/m² (F1514). Bar lights are specified by die configuration and beam angle — 1R1G1B at 10 W/m for line work, 4R4G4B and 6R6G6B at 18 W/m with a 120° beam for washing. Compare by job, not by one number.
Q2: Can LED bar lights display video? Yes, if spacing is a design parameter. Each bar carries one row of pixels (60 at P25 along 1,500 mm); vertical resolution is the distance between bars. Match it to the horizontal pitch and you have a raster.
Q3: Can a grille screen follow a curved facade? Only in rectangular steps — the cell is 1 m × 1 m, or 1 m × 0.4 / 0.5 m on the 1514. For curves, use bar lights or pixel point lights.
Q4: Which is faster to install? Bar lights, generally: fewer components per square metre and, with 1,500 mm bodies, fewer joints per run. A grille screen wins on flat rectangles, because the cell arrives pre-spaced.
Q5: Will they run on the same control system as the rest of the facade? Grille screens: yes, DMX512-2M alongside DMX point lights and flood lights. Of the bar lights, only the 3027 and 5426 are DMX512; the 2115, 2117 and 3415 need their own controller chain.
Q6: Which should I use on a bridge or a tower? Those are linear structures — cables, pylons, edges, ring beams — so bar lights fit the geometry. If the brief includes a large flat media surface, use a grille screen on that section and bars on the structural lines; both are IP67 low-voltage DC, so they meet cleanly.
